In recent years, social networks have often surprised us with photos that at first glance seem sensational. Such is the photograph, which shows a huge dark bird with outstretched wings, standing on a lawn in a residential area. For many people, the first reaction is surprise, even fear – "What is this giant bird?" or "Could this be an unknown species?"

The truth, however, is far calmer and indicative of how easily the human eye can be misled.

What we really see in the photo

The footage most likely captured a large bird of prey, such as a vulture or a great eagle, caught at a time when:

  • is on the ground, not in the air;
  • has fully spread wings;
  • was shot from a low or awkward angle, with no clear scale guideline.

Such birds can have a wingspan of between 2 and 3 meters, which is quite real and well documented in ornithology. However, when such a bird is photographed near objects such as grass, sloping terrain or distant houses, our eye automatically "increases" its size.

Why does the photo look so shocking
